Fashion sits at a crossroads. Art, science, sociology and business all intersect in a human endeavour that might seem trivial or superficial. But, as Shakespeare said: 'clothes maketh the wo/man'. How we dress and display speaks volumes - from the pragmatic uniforms of soldiers and nurses to the outlandish vestments of soldiers and catwalk models. In modern history fashion has also made cultural statements and has been interwoven with important movements like the emancipation of women and the sexual revolution. New technologies always evolving from the invention of the coloured fabric dyes to modern computing (the discovery of mauve as a by product of coal tar led the to the creation of modern chemistry with tributaries that run into medicine, agriculture and the everyday hygiene that makes modern life more tolerable. Computer programming began with punch cards designed to weave patterns in fabrics in steam age factories). There's more to fashion than meets the eye - so here's the fabulous Fashionistas!
